APA vs MLA vs Harvard: Citation Styles Explained for Students

By the DoraPDF team · 2 min read · Updated 2026-11-06

Your teacher says "use APA" — or MLA, or Harvard — and suddenly referencing feels complicated. All three styles do the same job: show where your information came from. They just format it differently.

APA (7th edition)

Used in psychology, education, business and the social sciences. APA focuses on author and date, because recent research matters in these subjects.

MLA (9th edition)

Used in English literature, languages and the humanities. MLA focuses on author and page number.

Harvard

Popular in UK, Australian and many Pakistani universities. Very similar to APA, with small punctuation differences.
