How to Convert PDF to Word for Free (Phone & PC)
PDFs are great for sharing because they look the same everywhere — but that also makes them hard to edit. If you need to change a CV, fix a typo in an assignment or reuse text from a report, the easiest route is to convert the PDF into a Word document first.
The quick way (under a minute)
- Open the PDF to Word converter on your phone or computer.
- Drop your PDF into the upload box, or tap it to choose a file.
- Press Convert now.
- Download the
.docxfile and open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or WPS Office.
That's it. There's no account to create, no email to enter and no watermark on the result.
Will my formatting be kept?
DoraPDF rebuilds the text of your PDF line by line. Bigger text such as titles and headings is detected and kept larger and bold, and each PDF page starts on a new page in Word. Normal documents — letters, CVs, assignments, reports — usually convert cleanly.
Very complex layouts are harder for any converter. Magazines with several columns, forms with lots of boxes and tables with merged cells may need a few minutes of tidying in Word afterwards.
What about scanned PDFs?
A scanned PDF is really just a photo of a page. There's no text inside it to extract, so a normal converter returns an empty document. To edit a scanned page you need OCR (optical character recognition), which reads the letters from the image. Our OCR tool is on the way; until then, retyping short scans is often quickest.
Is it safe to convert private documents?
Most online converters upload your file to their servers. DoraPDF doesn't — the conversion runs inside your browser, on your own device. Your bank statement or ID copy never leaves your phone or laptop.
Going the other way
Finished editing? Use Word to PDF to turn your document back into a PDF before you email or submit it. And if you only need the raw text — for example to paste into ChatGPT — try PDF to TXT.
Tips for the best results
- Start from the original PDF. A PDF exported from Word or Google Docs converts far better than one that was printed and scanned.
- Check fonts after converting. If your PDF used a special font, Word may substitute a similar one. Select all and pick a font you like.
- Fix spacing with Find & Replace. Replace double spaces with single spaces in one click.
