How to Calculate Your GPA (With Easy Examples)

By the DoraPDF team · 2 min read · Updated 2026-11-06

GPA (Grade Point Average) turns your letter grades into a single number, usually on a 4.0 scale. It's what scholarships, universities and many employers look at first.

The formula

GPA = total grade points ÷ total credit hours

Grade points for one course = grade value × credit hours.

Common 4.0 scale

Grade Points
A / A+ 4.0
A- 3.67
B+ 3.33
B 3.0
B- 2.67
C+ 2.33
C 2.0
D 1.0
F 0

Scales differ slightly between universities — always check your handbook.

Worked example

Course Grade Credits Points
Calculus A (4.0) 3 12.0
Physics B+ (3.33) 4 13.32
English A- (3.67) 2 7.34
Programming B (3.0) 3 9.0
Total 12 41.66

GPA = 41.66 ÷ 12 = 3.47

The faster way

Use the free GPA Calculator: add your courses, pick each grade and enter the credit hours. Your GPA updates as you type, and you can add as many courses as you need.
